Over my 2,5 years at Strelka, I led the entire redesign of the institute’s digital surfaces. This included the entirety of strelka.com platform, which was visited by 432K visitors a month.

Insight

Found in 2009, Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design was one of the foremost institutions in the field of urbanism. It closed down in 2022 as a response to Russian invasion into Ukraine. Upon joining Strelka in 2019, I took the lead to redesign the institute's website to address challenges related to its lack of responsiveness and neglect of mobile layouts.

The initiative aimed to enhance the user experience across devices, particularly addressing the 54% desktop and 46% mobile user ratio observed at the time. Another reason for the redesign was platform's expansion plans to accommodate multiple branches of the Institute.

Idea

The vision for the new website was centered around a modular structure, designed to facilitate easy organization and adaptability. One of the standout features of the design proposal was its flexibility to host a variety of programmes and content, while maintaining a cohesive design.

The dynamic main page adapts seasonally, reflecting the current primary focus, whether it's Strelka Summer events, program open calls, or updates on released books and podcasts.

End Result

The platform incorporated free online courses on urbanism and architecture, e-com shop integration for Strelka Press books and personal account for course tracking, event registration, applications, bookmarks and more.

The modular design consists of a set of components for events, media, profiles, and books, complemented by smart recommendations. A tag system seamlessly connects various departments, people, and events, facilitating easy content navigation and boosting user retention.
